Z2K is working with the Public Law Project on a legal challenge to the Government’s refusal to uplift of legacy benefits by the same £20 a week as has been given to Universal Credit claimants since April. The challenge is on the basis that this discriminates against disabled and seriously unwell people in receipt of ESA and others in receipt of JSA and Income Support.
They are looking for prospective claimants to be involved in this legal challenge. They need to be eligible for legal aid for this so it would not cost them anything other than time to be involved in the challenge.
Given the Government’s intransigent response so far, we really do feel legal action will significantly increase pressure on ministers to look at this issue again. The three-month deadline is looming and so I’m afraid there is a very tight deadline to get in touch (26 May).If you or someone from your organisation is interested (ideally someone on ESA and who would find potential barriers to moving to Universal Credit), please get in touch with Ella Abraham: policycampaigns at z2k dot org
